What Can Crowns Do for Your Smile?

Strength and Function

A dental crown from Dr. Michael Feldstein can restore strength to a damaged tooth. By capping the tooth with a porcelain, zirconia, or IPS e.max® crown, you should be able to eat, speak, and smile with confidence.

Natural-Looking Results

Both dental porcelain and IPS e.max materials mimic the qualities of natural teeth. Dr. Feldstein can carefully design and place your crown so it blends seamlessly into your smile.

Versatile Uses

We can use a dental crown to treat a wide range of conditions, from concealing cosmetic flaws to replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant. Crowns are also used after a root canal or trauma to protect and support a damaged tooth.

What Is IPS e.max? An Alternative to Porcelain

/

Our Flushing, NY, dental office uses the most effective materials in dentistry to help your metal-free crowns last as long as possible. In addition to porcelain and zirconia, we're proud to offer IPS e.max® crowns. These lithium disilicate ceramic crowns cost more than traditional porcelain crowns, but they offer even greater strength and cosmetic benefits.

Crowns Can Address a Range of Issues

Weak Teeth

If a tooth has been compromised by severe decay, a large crack, or other trauma, a crown can protect the surface and provide support to help avoid tooth extraction.

Broken or Worn Teeth

For a tooth that has already been broken or has been worn down due to grinding or clenching, a dental crown can restore both its proper structure and appearance.

Teeth That Have Had Fillings or Root Canals

After undergoing root canal therapy or getting a large dental filling, a permanent crown can cover and support the weakened tooth to keep it healthy.

Cosmetic Imperfections

In some cases, Dr. Feldstein may recommend a crown instead of a porcelain veneer or other cosmetic treatment to conceal cosmetic flaws, such as tooth discoloration.

Missing Teeth

If you are missing a single tooth, a crown can be fixed to a dental implant to fill the gap in your smile. Crowns are also used to support traditional dental bridges.

Why Not Pull a
Damaged or Decayed Tooth?

It may seem simpler to just pull a damaged or decayed tooth. However, even a single missing tooth can lead to your other teeth shifting, jawbone atrophy, and further tooth loss.

A dental crown allows your dentist to preserve the remaining healthy tooth structure and prevents the need for more extensive dental treatments like bone grafting or dental implants later on.

Have Significant Oral Health Issues? Our Flushing Dental Practice Can Help by Using Crowns

Jewel Dental Associates proudly offers a full range of comprehensive treatments to meet all your dental care needs. Dental crowns are often used in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry procedures to improve overall health and appearance.

Restoring Your Oral Function

Have significant issues that make it difficult to eat or speak? Full mouth reconstruction treatment combines multiple dental procedures like dental crowns, implants, and more to restore your oral function so you can eat the foods you love and speak with confidence.

Enhancing Your Smile Aesthetics

If your issues are more cosmetic, a smile makeover combines multiple cosmetic dentistry treatments like veneers, teeth whitening, dental crowns, and more to enhance the appearance of your smile so you can confidently share it with the world.

Treatment Costs Will Vary

At Jewel Dental Associates in Flushing, NY, our normal fee for a dental crown is $1,200. However, some patients may only pay $800. There are several factors that can affect the cost of your restoration.

For a single missing tooth, an implant-supported crown offers incredible benefits.
For a single missing tooth, an implant-supported crown offers incredible benefits.

Materials Used

Dr. Feldstein typically uses dental ceramic, zirconia, or IPS e.max to create beautiful, lifelike crowns. While metal crowns tend to cost less, they do not offer the same aesthetic results. We can discuss your options with you to help you make an informed decision.

Level of Damage

If the decay or damage to your smile is extensive, you may need other preparatory procedures to improve your oral health before we place your crown. These treatments can increase your overall cost.

Location of the Crown

It's typically easier to place a crown on a tooth in the front of your smile. If you need a crown on a molar, your treatment may cost more.

If an Implant Is Needed

For a single missing tooth, an implant-supported crown offers incredible benefits. However, implant placement will add to your treatment cost.

Financing Is Available

Your oral health is important to us. If the cost of dental crowns is a financial burden, you can receive financing through CareCredit®. Their payment plans can help make your treatment more affordable.

Restore Your Smile In Two Easy Appointments

Dr. Feldstein will examine your smile and determine whether a dental crown is the right treatment for you. He can also discuss the different materials we offer with you at that time.

We will remove the damaged or decayed portion of your tooth to restore proper health.

Dr. Feldstein will reshape your tooth to ensure the crown fits comfortably into your smile without appearing too large or bulky.

We will make an impression of your oral structures and send the information to the lab, where your custom-crafted crown will be created.

Since it typically takes about two weeks for the lab to fabricate a custom crown, Dr. Feldstein will place a temporary crown over your prepared tooth. To avoid dislodging the temporary crown, avoid eating sticky foods. You should also try to chew on the side of your mouth opposite the temporary crown.

At your second appointment, Dr. Feldstein will remove your temporary crown and check the fit and appearance of your permanent restoration. He can make minor adjustments to ensure you are satisfied with the result.

Once you are both happy with the fit and feel of your crown, Dr. Feldstein will bond your crown into place for a fully restored smile

Pair Your Dental Crown  With Titanium Dental Implants

If you are missing a tooth, dental implants offer unparalleled support for your dental crown. Dental implants are titanium posts that act as artificial tooth roots. Implants not only provide amazing stability for custom restorations, but they also provide the jawbone with the stimulation it needs to remain healthy.

Dental implants are the only restorative dentistry treatment that can prevent jawbone deterioration that occurs after tooth loss. When paired with a natural-looking dental crown, you can enjoy restored oral function, an enhanced appearance, and avoid the need for bone grafting later.

Take A Look At How  Dental Implants and Crowns Are Placed

During a surgical procedure at our Flushing practice, your dentist will place the dental implant directly into your jaw. The implants provide the stimulation the tooth roots once provided. Your custom crown is then attached to the implant to restore your oral function and appearance.

Preserving Your
Permanent Crown

Your finished crown will be more durable and fixed than a temporary crown, though it can still become damaged or knocked loose.

There are several ways you can prevent unnecessary wear and prolong the lifespan of your dental crown, including:

  • Avoiding especially hard or sticky foods
  • Practicing good oral hygiene at home
  • Not using abrasive toothpaste
  • Flossing front to back (rather than up and down) to avoid loosening your crown
  • Always attending your bi-annual dental exams
  • Wearing a nightguard if you suffer from bruxism or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
  • Not using your teeth as tools to open or cut items

During your exams, Dr. Feldstein will also check the fit of your crown and make any adjustments as necessary.

Does Getting a Dental Crown Hurt?

Dr. Feldstein and Team

If you've been worried about feeling pain or discomfort during the dental crown process, there's nothing to fear. We'll use a local anesthetic to thoroughly numb your tooth before Dr. Feldstein gently shapes it and places your crown. You'll feel virtually nothing at all while under our care. In fact, treating your tooth with a crown will actually help eliminate the discomfort that comes along with dental damage or decay.

If you're still feeling anxious about getting a crown, our sedation services can put you at ease. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, induces deep relaxation while allowing you to remain conscious throughout your treatment.

White dental filling

Alternatives to Crowns

Depending on your needs, a number of different treatment options might be available to you. Dental fillings, inlays, and onlays are all more conservative solutions for repairing damaged teeth. Porcelain veneers are ideal for concealing purely cosmetic cracks and chips, although they are better suited to the front teeth than the back molars.

During a consultation at our Flushing, NY, office, our dentists can determine which procedure is the most appropriate for you.
